Aqabat al-Mufti → Khan al-Zeit

Why stop here

You step out of the alley into a covered market. Souq Khan al-Zeit is named for the oil khan, a merchants' store. It runs on the line of the Roman Cardo. The Seventh Station is here, at the junction.

Look for

• The market roof: stone vaults, with light slots cut in.
• A Franciscan chapel at the junction marks the Seventh Station.
• Two more market streets run parallel, just west.

Context

The Romans laid one wide street here, the Cardo, about 22 metres across. The Crusaders split it into three narrow covered markets in 1152. Those three still run side by side today.

To the next stop

Turn south-west and climb Aqabat al-Khanqah, about 50 m.
