Holy Sepulchre courtyard

Why stop here

The walk ends in a stone courtyard. Two streets feed into it. One door leads inside. The second was bricked up long ago.

Look for

• A wooden ladder on a window ledge, above the door.
• The bricked-up right-hand doorway, beside the open one.
• Six Christian communities share this building.

Context

The ladder has not moved since at least 1728. An Ottoman order of 1757 froze how the church is shared. Nothing may change unless all six communities agree. Two Muslim families still keep the key and open the door each day.
