Why stop here

The tanners' market. This street opens into the courtyard of the Holy Sepulchre. It is one of only two ways in.

Look for

• The street sign, naming the tanners.
• The church courtyard, ahead of you to the west.
• St Helena Road, the other way in, on the far side.

Context

Tanning is dirty work and it smells. Cities used to keep it at the edge. Here it sits beside the busiest church in Jerusalem.

Turn south and walk about 80 m into the Muristan.
