Why stop here

You are on the Roman main street. The Cardo ran from that gate south through the city. The souq has followed its line for two thousand years.

Look for

• The street runs straight, unlike the alleys around it.
• Shops on both sides, roofed over the middle.
• Side alleys climbing east and west.

Context

Khan al-Zeit means the oil khan. A khan was a merchants' store and lodging. Olive oil came in from the villages and was traded here.
