Ecce Homo Arch

Why stop here

A Roman arch crosses the street above you. Hadrian's builders raised it in the 2nd century. It was the middle span of a triple gateway. That gateway opened onto a forum of Aelia Capitolina.

Look for

• The arch itself, crossing the alley wall to wall.
• The Ecce Homo convent sign, and the Lithostrotos plaque below it.
• A second sign names the side stair: the Nuns' Ascent.

Context

A wide stone pavement lies under the convent next door. Guides once called it the floor of Jesus's trial. Most scholars now date it to Hadrian's forum, a century later.

To the next stop

Keep west on Via Dolorosa, about 170 m, to the Al-Wad junction.
