El-Wad corner

Why stop here

Via Dolorosa meets Al-Wad Street here. Al-Wad means the valley. The street follows the buried Tyropoeon valley. It runs from Damascus Gate south to the Western Wall.

Look for

• The enamel street sign, in three scripts, on the corner stone.
• A carved medallion cut into the stone above the sign.
• The Austrian Hospice, built in 1854, stands on the junction.

Context

Sultan Suleiman put a public fountain on this street in 1536. It is called Sabil al-Wad. Ottoman Jerusalem had a line of such fountains for people on foot.

To the next stop

Only about 30 m further west. The two stops sit close together.
